Is the US military really suited towards fighting a 4th generation war against terrorism?

Seriously, when you look at it, is the US army really suited to fighting terrorists or rogue states? When you look at the American forces, they look like they are going to fight a modern version of WWII or the Cold War! Seriously, I mean, why do you need:

- 12 carrier battle groups
- support 3 fighter groups (like the f-22 or f-35 is ever going to lure mujahadeens out of the street or the mountain or the desert)
- 50 nuclear attack submarines and a dozen ballistic missile subs
- about 5000 tanks
- training tactics for "high-intensity war"
- thousands of air superiority fighters, and dozens, if not hundreds of heave bombers

Is that really the best options to fight terrorism, which the Bush administration repeatedly declares it top priority? What could they be doing better right now? I mean, that does not seem like the best option for counter-guerilla warfare.

Congratulations. You are one of the few people who even realize that the concept of a fourth generation war exists.

Our forces are learning. There is still politics involved at the top, but most good soldiers are already studying new ways to cope.

Includes:The Battle of El Alamein (1968) Cinque per l'inferno (1968) La Battaglia dell'Ultimo Panzer (1969) Hitler's SS: Portrait in Evil (1985) The Battle of El Alamein No relation to the 1953 El Alamein (beyond a common "real life" source), The Battle of El Alamein was a French-Italian coproduction, largely lensed in Spain. Set during the titular desert battle of 1942, the film departs from expectation by concentrating on the Axis point of view. Though they mistrust one another, the German and Italian troops are forced to work shoulder to shoulder to ward off the British. And talk about revisionist history: Rommel (Robert Hossein) is the hero of the piece, and Montgomery (Michael Rennie) is the villain! Battle of El Alamein would make a fascinating triple feature with Five Graves to Cairo (1943) and The Desert Fox (1953). Incidentally, the "Calvin Jackson Padgett" credited with the direction is really Giorgio Ferroni. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Cinque per l'inferno During WWII, the army chooses five of its most courageous and coldhearted soldiers to infiltrate German lines for a suicide mission to secure enemy plans. ~ Rovi La Battaglia dell'Ultimo Panzer Sometimes known by the title Warlock -- and not to be confused with the Julian Sands horror flick -- this Spanish/Italian co-production is actually a war film concerning the Battle of Normandy and a group of surviving soldiers who attempt to make it back to their homeland. Cheapie horror director Jose Luis Merino helms. ~ Michael Hastings, Rovi Hitler's SS: Portrait in Evil The two-part TV movie Hitler's SS: Portrait in Evil crystallizes that evil by concentrating on two Berlin brothers. In 1931, Helmut Hoffman (Bill Nighy) a brilliant student and self-styled opportunist, joins Hitler's SS. At the same time, his younger brother Karl (John Shea), a top athlete and idealist, becomes a chauffeur for the "S.A." (storm troopers). When the SS topples the SA from power, Karl ends up in Dachau. He is rescued through his brother's influence--if you can describe sending Karl to fight on the Russian Front a "rescue." As he watches the Third Reich deteriorate, Helmut at long last suffers pangs of conscience. As if the story of the rise of Nazism needed any further melodrama, Hitler's SS shoehorns in a romantic triangle involving Karl, Helmut, and beautiful nightclub-singer Lucy Gutteridge. The all-star supporting cast of Hitler's SS includes Carroll Baker as the Hoffman brothers' anguished mother; Tony Randall as an androgynous entertainer named Putzi (shades of Cabaret's Joel Grey); and David Warner, repeating his Holocaust role as SS head man Heydrich. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

If, while watching such cable services as A&E and the History Channel, you happen to see filmclips of the WWII African campaign against Germany's Erwin Rommel, chances are good that the footage was culled from Desert Victory. This Academy Award-winning British documentary traces the struggle between the opposing forces of generals Rommel and Montgomery, from the defeat at El Alemein to the ultimate British victory at Tripoli. The film made quite an impact upon its first release due to its heavy reliance on captured German newsreel footage. The man responsible for Desert Victory was David MacDonald, who gave up a lucrative commercial career for the duration to concentrate on factual films. MacDonald followed Desert Victory with the equally well-received Burma Victory (1945). ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Imperial War Museum: Desert Victory

movie about a tank crew fighting in the desert?

ok im looking for a movie about a tank crew that is fighting in the desert. the tank is a WWI style but it may actually take place in WWII. the plot takes place in the ruins of an ancient fortress that has a well that only offers a few drips of water. im sure that it is a force of germans trying to take this fortress but it has been over 10 years since i last saw this movie and the only part i can really remember is the ending. the tank crew takes several of the germans prisoner and the well has opened up due to a mortar shell exploding inside it. im sorry but that is the best i can remember any of it.

Sahara (1943)
IMDb synopsis:
While fighting in Libya during World War II, Sgt. Joe Gunn (Humphrey Bogart) and his M3 Lee tank lovingly referred to as Lulabelle are attached to the British Eighth Army. A retreat order comes through and Joe and his crew, Waco (Bruce Bennet) and Jimmy Doyle (Dan Duryea) are separated from their division and travel across the desert hoping to avoid Rommel's troops when they meet a rag tag group of British soldiers at a field hospital unaware of the retreat. In desperate need of water, Joe and his added passengers head toward the site of ancient Roman ruins which holds a watering hole many miles in the distance. Along the way they rescue an Italian soldier who goes by the name Guiseppi (J. Carrol Naish) and a Sudanese soldier and are attacked by a German plane. They shoot down the plane and take the pilot prisoner and learn from him that there are thousands of German soldiers needing water who are travelling toward the well at the ruins where Gunn and his crew is heading. When Gunn arrives at the watering hole the flow of water is very slow and they work diligently to get enough for themselves. Wanting to slow down the incoming Germans from rejoining the war, Gunn sends Waco out across the desert to retrieve the American army nearby for assistance, but the question is whether the desert may prove to be too much.
Here's the opening of the movie:

Unfortunately, I haven't found it on YouTube, but I'd think this should be readily available, being a Bogie movie.

You did a good job of describing the movie, as the ruins and the well nail this classic film!
