Wwii German Soldiers
Do you think WWII German soldiers are portrayed in an unfair light?
Movies always seem to portray them as crazed Nazis. From what I've seen of actual footage and research, most were no more different than the U.S. troops. Basicaly, just kids doing their job. What do you think?
the average German soldier was likely not greatly different than the average allied soldier. The Germans though, had 'elite' fanatical units. The 12th SS Panzer Division comes to mind. My dad was a veteran of D-Day. Members of his and other regiments were captured by the Germans in the first couple of days after D-Day and handed over to the SS. Upwards of 150 of them were murdered. These men were all Canadian soldiers. The British and Americans had greater numbers of troops in France at this time so it's logical to assume their troops suffered the same fate only in even greater numbers.
After the war, the Colonel in command of that particular SS unit was tried for war crimes. He received seven years in prison but never spent a day behind bars.
As said previously, while the 'average' German soldier was likely not much different than the 'average' allied soldier, the Germans had these fanatical murders in their midst. I don't think the allies committed acts like this on such a scale.
The atrocities commited by the Germans on the Eastern front were even more horrendous. Thus, movies etc., will depict the German soldier in the worst possible light.

Why do British military range targets depict German soldiers?
The plywood targets used on British military firing ranges for infantry training depict WWII German soldiers. More than 60 years after the war why is this image as an enemy still used?
I know what the type of target I'm asking about looks like, I used to be in the army. It is a depiction of a German soldier and not a generic one but seeing as we are now fighting side by side with them, (I work with the British military in Germany) should another image not be designed?
I'm British too in case anyone thought otherwise.
this target known as the charging Hun is as you say been around for many years although strictly speaking has never been referred to by the M.O.D. as depicting a German soldier and according to them is a generalisation target although all British soldiers call it the charging Hun due to the shape of the helmet,the M.O.D.also work along the lines of if it isn't broke dont fix it so the target has remained in its present form and serves its purpose well
