Eighth Army
For Soldiers serving in a division, what does a regiment mean these days?
Sorry, I have always been in INSCOM units and are Bns have simple names like 310th MI Bn or 202nd MI Bn. When I was in AF, I was with 2-508th PIR, 4th BCT, 82nd ABN. Pronounced "second of the five oh eighth". 4th BCT's other Bns were called 1-508th PIR and 4-73 CAV. So what is the 508th or the 73rd? The Army doesn't have Regiments anymore right? I noticed the other Divisions have the same kind of thing going on as well. My gut tells me this is just something done for traditional reasons but I want to be sure.
Today, it really means nothing. Its just historical.
We are all in Brigades so the regimental names are just names except for certain things like the Ranger Regiment or the Cavalry Regiments.
Plus, with the modular Army, even the Division HQ are really just historical now since brigades are mix and matched.
My division HQ had brigades from 3 different divisions while we were in Iraq for example.
