Medieval Army
What kind of men did medieval armies have?
Of course, there are soldiers and generals and all, but what about servants, and workmen? Could you please give me a list?
Heavy cavalry. These were usually rich lords, who bought their own armor, horses, and assistants. The wore heavy armor, hence the name. They were sort of the tanks of their day. Their strategy was to just mow down whatever was in their path. Very effective tactic.

Medieval II Total War - English Army - The Battle
How would an ancient or medieval army (like the ancient Romans, for example) survive when surrounded?
For example, say that the Roman squad with 50 men is backed against a pit, while the Carthaginian squad with 100 men are advancing upon them. They both have swords and shields. What would the Romans have done to survive?
They would use the testudo formation and hack away at the Carthaginians while the enemy pounded themselves uselessly against their shields.
EDIT: To Brandon. It is called the testudo formation, and not "tuxedo" formation.
Also to R. He is asking about a skirmish in an open field, not a siege of a fortified position.
If you want a prime example of how Roman discipline and formations defeated a far numerically superior army, then look at the Battle of Watling Street in 60 AD between Gaius Suetonius Paulinus and the British warrior woman Boudica. Accounts are sketchy, but it is said that roughly 10,000 romans defeated 100,000-230,000 barbarians.
