i have 2 essay prompts from world history that i don't understand, can someone help me....
1. Compare and contrast the efforts to ensure European "collective security" that were made by the victors after the Napoleonic Wars with those made by the Allied Powers after World War I.
2. "Single party regimes have all had one feature in common: they all have been the product of a crisis situation." Examine, with reference to at least THREE specific examples, the truth of the statement.

With respect, I disagree with the first part of the answerer above me. The idea of "Collective Security" doesn't necessarily have anything to do with alliances -- it has to do with forging a consensus on how decisions should be made in the international arena. In other words, it's about the creation of a "New World Order." And that doesn't necessarily mean alliances. The USA and the Soviet Union forged a de facto consensus on world order after WW II -- and they were scarcely allies. The concept of the MAD Doctrine is a perfect example of Collective Security consensus.
What this question is really asking you to do is to compare and contrast the Congress of Vienna (and in particular the actions of Prince Metternich) with the Versailles Peace Conference (and the actions of the "Big Four").
The second question is asking you to look at revolutionary one-party regimes such as the Communist states of Russia and China. Why do these one party states emerge from crisis? (They always do). Look up communist revolutions and you'll get your answers.

why do u think the acid broke only 50% of the linkages in the wheat starch?
During the Napoleonic Wars in the early 1800s, there was a sugar shortage in Europe because supply ships were blockaded from harbors. to create artificial sweeteners, German scientists hydrolyzed wheat starch. they did this by adding hydrochloric acid to heared starch solutions, which cause some of the glycosidic linkages between the glucose monomers to break. the process broken only about 50% of the glycosidic linkages, however, so the sweetener was less sweet than sugar. in addition, consumers complained of a slight bitterness resulting from by products of the reaction.
