What are good ways to start a story?
I am writing a story about a princess named Charlotte. Any idea's???
Start in the middle of some action and reveal the way she is by what she does in the circumstance. It doesn't have to be ACTIVE action - like in her running or fighting or something - but something has to be going on that creates some sort of conflict.
Boring beginning - Charlotte was a very beautiful girl who was the princess of the Kingdom of Whatever. She loved riding horses and braiding her long, blond hair.
Interesting beginning - The golden clip fell from the end of Charlotte's braid, but she could not stop to pick it up. Laying flat against her mare's neck, she had no choice but to go where the horse took her. She turned her head to sneak a glance back at the men pursuing her.
"Stupid!" she thought, anger flushing her cheeks. "Stupid for the princess to go riding out alone!"
Same information, but a lot of action thrown in gets the reader engaged right away.

Alice, Charlotte, Elizabeth, and Victoria are my favorites from this list. Also, you have a plethora of nicknames to choose from (Alice/Allie, Charlotte/Lottie, Elizabeth/Libby, etc.). The only one I don't care for in its diminutive form is Victoria. I simply cannot abide by Vicky or Tori.

Lovely article my dear! Hey I didn't know you were going to Leicester! It's years since I've been in the city centre, did you go into Gadsby's? I used to love it in there when I was little, I'd get a little wad of 4″ felt squares for about 30p or something and make them into appliques! Did you see the clock tower? Why no pic? Or the magazine? Or the Princess Charlotte? (I've even played there!) Ooh I'm getting a bit of deja vu, I wonder if you HAVE told me about this and I forgot… sorry! It was all the shopping made me forget!! Oh nooooo!!!!
