FINAL CUT PRO EXPERTS: I have a file exported from final cut -- can I open or convert it on a PC?
This is for the final cut gurus out there: I have a file exported from final cut pro -- it's an uncompressed quicktime movie ('export > QT movie' in final cut, NOT 'export > QT conversion'). Is there any way of viewing or converting this on a PC?
I don't see why you can't convert it on a PC. You will need to have the proper QuickTime codec to read the file on a PC. Make sure you've got the most recent version of Quicktime, and unfortunately, some filetypes (i.e. mpeg2) require you purchase the upgrade to Quicktime Pro for playback. I don't believe this is the case with Quicktime Files, exported from FCP.
If you have access to FCP, you could try importing it (which should require no rendering) and export it again as a different filetype. If it is, in fact, Final Cut Pro (and not Final Cut Express) that you're using, Compressor will also be installed on the computer. You could try exporting the file using Compressor and save it to a variety of filetypes without a loss in quality, perhaps even lowering the filesize.
If you have the video saved to a disc, you will want to be sure that the disc was formatted (during the burn process) to be read by Mac and PC. Toast Titanium has the option of burning for Mac alone, or both. If it was burned only for Mac, you'll have no chance of the disc even being read by the computer.
The problem with all these filetypes is that they have specific programs to be able to utilize the files the their full potential. I struggle with wmv files because there is no support for Windows media player for Mac. .movs are supported by Quicktime, .rmvs are Real Player files. your best bet is converting through quicktime, unless you have the option of re-exporting from Final Cut.
