Help on training my horse to show --?

I would like to show my 14.1 hh 4 y/o Halflinger/Paint Gelding in Contesting this summer in 4-H . He's very fast , and he's only done contesting once . I don't think I'm doing flag races this year , and I might do keyhole , I'm not sure . What are some training tips to get my horse ready to show ? And how far apart do the poles & barrels need to be ? I don't have poles , so what else could I use ? Cones ? Please & Thank You ! (:

I would put your barrels about 5 strides apart.

Poles are always fun to teach. You can use cones and branches or cones and yard sticks. Start out with them pretty spaced out and run the pattern as fast as you can without knocking a pole over. Gradually make the spaces between your poles smaller and smaller. When i learned, my Trainer had me pole bending with like 3 ft spaces and then when i went to show it was so much easier. good luck

Dukes Of Hazzard BEST SCENE IN THE 2005 MOVIE

Is this a desecration of the flag?

My mother, who is in her 50s, used to paint signs on large, wood canvas' for her horse-riding club. These signs would tell of upcoming riding events and were displayed inpublic view on street corners. She did this for quite a while for the club. She tries to be creative; on one of her signs she painted the flag (or most of it); and on the white stipe parts she gave the next meeting location and time. No one in the horse riding club complained.
Shortly after it was displayed a columnist or whatever for the local paper wrote a scathing article about how wrong and an insult it was to desecrate the flag. Although a lot of the club members thought this person had nothing better to do with her time, they later took it down and now my mother refuses to do the signs anymore.

thoughts? any similar experiences?

There is a school of thought that says using the image of the flag in any way other than waiving an actual flag in patriotism (and then folding it properly) is a desecration. I see people all around me these days who wear the U.S. flag as pins, earrings, t-shirts, caps, etc. (I've done this myself often.) Being a conservative, I deeply believe in what the flag stands for - FREEDOM. Though I do understand why this columnist might have an issue (and I don't believe they wrote it just because they had nothing else to do), I also think it's a shame that your mom doesn't do the signs any more just because of this incident. She obviously didn't mean any harm, and perhaps she was simply using the image of the flag in patriotism. Many people like to use the image of the flag to display their patriotism, and I don't see a problem with that. When people TRULY desecrate the flag, i.e. burning it, that's when I think it's horrible; HOWEVER, I don't believe as many of my colleagues do that there should be an amendment to stop this sort of action. We have enough laws limiting our freedoms. It's a shame that people don't understand that the flag stands for FREEDOM, and NOT the government, per se, but I still don't think that just because they're idiots - and obviously don't APPRECIATE their freedoms - they should be penalized. Hopefully, your mom will not let one person's opinion deter her from doing what she enjoys, ESPECIALLY since, like I said, it's obvious she meant no harm (and didn't even use an actual flag, but only its image). This is, of course, my humble conservative/borderline libertarian opinion. And I approve of this message.

By the way, to the person who said your question is too long (but answered it anyway? what up wi dat?! just trying to get points I guess): Geeez! Can ANYONE read a couple of paragraphs any more?! Two lousy paragraphs ... and it's too long?! Yipes.
